Self-Advocate Businesses

Just for You CardArt by Donna and Jenna

Jenna and DonnaDonna (Left) and Jenna (Right) are best friends. In fact, many people have mistaken them for sisters. For years they swam, bowled, played tennis, danced, sang and just hung out together.  They decided to start a business together. It is called "Just For You CardArt by Donna and Jenna.” They sell greeting cards designed and created by them.

The business had its debut July 16, 2010, at the National Down Syndrome Congress Convention (NDSC) in Orlando, Florida where they attended the Youth and Adult self-advocates conference and had an exhibit booth to show and sell their CardArt. Donna and Jenna have both been members of DSAA since they were babies. Donna’s mom, Rita Williams, served on the board in various positions with the highest being president in the mid 90’s and Jenna’s mom, Denise Quigley, was on the board and edited the newsletter for a number of years.

The business began as a hobby of Rita’s. She created cards. The girls liked to help her stamp and decorate them. For years people told Rita her cards were pieces of art and she should start her own business. Donna and Jenna liked the idea so much, they took it on! With Rita’s help, they began creating their own cards and then launched their business. Their cards are truly works of art.  Every card is handmade with no two cards exactly alike. They sell their CardArt at conferences and on Etsy:

For small business Saturday they will offer free shipping on all orders with code HOLIDAYSHIP.

Candidly Kind by Grace Key
Grace Key is this year’s Buddy of the Year 21 & under for DSAA and is also a brand designer and spokesperson for Candidly Kind. She’s a 20-year-old high school senior who has used writing, drawing and painting throughout her life to express her feelings. Grace instinctively creates happy images, notes, letters and messages of inspiration for friends and family and now she wants to share them with the world.

Spreading a message of light and love, her first design is a theme Grace herself has truly embodied since birth. No matter the situation Grace always shines brightly. She believes if everyone shines their light no one will ever have to live in darkness.

Grace aims to promote kindness and a belief in oneself no matter what the obstacles. She hopes her creations will remind you to live with authenticity, act with love and treat everyone you meet with an open heart. She gives a portion of every sale to charity.

What's Inside

Deslie Quinby, Author and mom to JC

Celebrate our world and our heroes.

Help show the world what we "can" do. What better way could there be to educate people on what is possible? If you are looking for a book where the hero has Down syndrome, check out the series (Below), Down Syndrome adventures. They are not books about Down syndrome, but the hero, K.C., happens to have Down syndrome.

Darden's Delights

Darden's Delights

Darden is a vibrant redhead with Down syndrome and the inspiration behind Darden's Delights! Its story began at the Peachtree Presbyterian Preschool Spring Fling bake sale in Atlanta, GA when Darden's family donated a few fudge pies. The pies were wrapped with a bow, a simple sticker of Darden’s picture, serving suggestions, and a name: “Darden’s Desserts”, which eventually became Darden's Delights. Darden's Delights is famous for its classic fudge pie recipe that originated (in Waycross, Georgia) from Darden and Anna’s great-grandmother, MaTee!

Special Needs Publications
Our Books Speak Volumes
Meeting Every Special Need
We are lifetime members of DSAA, and my son Charlie Hart TenEyck (15) has Down syndrome. As a single stay-at-home mom, I wrote and published a book (HERE I AM by Susie TenEyck) for the acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome, which won the Mom's Choice Award® and subsequently was nominated for BEST CHILDREN'S BOOK in the 2016 Georgia Author of the Year Awards. With 5-Star ratings, this title became the best book available to help children understand Down syndrome. It is rated for all ages 0-99+.

Special Needs Publications also promotes bullying prevention/intervention campaigns for children and adults with Down syndrome

and other special needs. Through countless hours of volunteer work, I also administrate about a dozen online groups related to the needs of Down syndrome, specifically, including managing the largest worldwide homeschooling group for families who homeschool their child with Down syndrome. My goal is to help other parents with services and information, from special dietary needs like gluten-free and dairy-free eating to speech and language disorders in children, which were unavailable or unattainable to me when my son was growing up in his earlier years.
