Preferred Language

Language Matters. The words we use and the words we hear shape the world around us and our experience within it. Individuals with disabilities continue to live in a world where they are the butt of jokes and recipients of ridicule, intentional or not. Comparing a something, or someone, to someone with a disability is a disservice to all.

DSAA supports and encourages adherence to both the National Down Syndrome Society’s Preferred Language Guidelines and the National Down Syndrome Congress’ People First language guidelines.

DSAA is also proud to join Special Olympics, Best Buddies and over 200 other organizations from around the world to support the Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign in the effort to change the hearts and minds of those who cannot let go of the r-word. Take the pledge!
