Gavin

Gavin

Our four-year-old son Gavin has Down syndrome. Our dreams and goals for Gavin are for him to be able to live independently. I want him to add to the world and make it a better place (as he already has), while enjoying life. If we wants to win an Oscar or a Grammy, I am okay with that too.

For Gavin to reach these goals society needs to become more aware of all children of different abilities, and relish in them. We need access to financial assistance with medical, educational programs, nutritional direction and care. We still struggle with paying for therapies, lessons, to allow him to reach his potential.

We have the Medicaid Waiver, and my insurance assists with some therapies but not medicine. It does not cover herbal supplements (many parents use melatonin for sleep issues) or therapy tools (chewy tubes, oral motor tools, sensory therapy, lekotek, etc.)

One thing I want everyone to know about Down syndrome is that it has made me, and everyone in my family, a better person.
